Urinetown The Musical

Music and Lyrics by Mark Hollmann

Book and Lyrics by Greg Kotis

"Urinetown: The Musical,” Great Show, Awful Title

A Tony Award-winning satirical comedy, Urinetown boldly blends outrageous humor with sharp political commentary. Set in a dystopian future where a severe water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets, citizens are forced to pay for the privilege of using public restrooms—services controlled by a corrupt megacorporation. In this world of oppression and absurdity, one idealistic young man leads a rebellion to reclaim basic human rights, challenging the system and igniting a revolution.

With music by Mark Hollmann and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, Urinetown is a wildly inventive show that simultaneously celebrates and parodies the traditions of musical theatre. Drawing inspiration from the works of Brecht and Weill, while paying homage to classic musicals like Les Misérables and West Side Story, the show is self-aware, full of surprises, and not afraid to break the "fourth wall." Its energetic score, clever lyrics, and meta-theatrical humor offer a truly unique theatrical experience that will keep you laughing even as it delivers sobering insights.

Since its Broadway debut in 2001, Urinetown has earned widespread acclaim, winning three Tony Awards including Best Book, Best Original Score, and Best Direction. Its daring blend of comedy and commentary has made it a modern favorite among schools, universities, and professional companies alike. Both a cautionary tale and a celebration of rebellion, Urinetown invites us to question authority, laugh at our own contradictions, and reconsider what justice really looks like when resources—and patience—run dry."
